Lebanon at the Crossroads: The Growing Intersection of Cybersecurity and Peacebuilding
In the late 1990s, Lebanon entered a new chapter marked by a gradual reduction in funding for military institutions. With no imminent threats on the horizon, resources were redirected towards peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts. Decades later, this shift has taken a modern twist: cybersecurity awareness and education are now central to many peacebuilding initiatives.
Cybersecurity and Peacebuilding in Lebanon: A Digital Battleground for Stability
Lebanon is currently navigating a period of extreme instability, marked by internal political division, refugee crises, and increasing cyber threats. With a history of internal conflicts and geopolitical tension, Lebanon faces an urgent need for innovative solutions for long-term peacebuilding. One of the most crucial but underexplored tools in this effort is cybersecurity. As cyberattacks escalate, the importance of securing Lebanon’s digital infrastructure cannot be overstated. Cybersecurity is key to reducing internal political fragmentation, protecting vulnerable refugee populations, and defending Lebanon from regional and international cyberattacks. Strengthening cybersecurity will not only enhance Lebanon's national security but also contribute to a sustainable peacebuilding strategy that addresses both political and technological challenges.
